Spread Spencer’s Sparkle is giving away Pride flags during the month of June as part of their mission to bring visibility and awareness to the LGBTQ+ community in honor of their son Spencer.
The flags measure 3’ x 5’ and feature the seven colors of the rainbow. These flags are available to both residents and businesses to display during June. Sarasota County Burn Ban
A burn ban is currently in effect for Sarasota County due to local drought conditions and the increased chance of fire hazards. All outdoor burning is prohibited unless a permit has been issued and is applicable for the unincorporated areas of Sarasota County. Exceptions to this include cooking on barbeque grills or pits that do not exceed three feet in diameter and two feet in height, or any other valid state or county authorized burn. The burn ban will lift automatically if drought index falls below 500 for seven consecutive days and the announcement will be made on scgov.net and county social media pages. Charlotte County Burn Ban
Charlotte County has imposed a ban on all outdoor burning and the use and discharge of fireworks and sparklers due to continued drought-like conditions on the recommendation of Charlotte County Fire-EMS Fire Chief Jason Fair. The outdoor burn ban includes recreational fires, the burning of yard waste and pile burning for land clearing. Agricultural and silvicultural controlled burns authorized by the Florida Forest Service are permitted. Commercial and permitted fireworks shows may be excluded from the ban on a case-by-case basis with approval from the local fire marshal. Fertilizer Ban in Effect
From June 1 to September 30, please remember that fertilizers containing nitrogen or phosphorus are NOT allowed on your residential or commercial turf or landscape plants. Why, you ask? During the summer rainy season, excessive fertilizing and improper application can lead to runoff. When the runoff reaches waterways, the fertilizer nutrients can nourish harmful aquatic algae and kill aquatic life. If you want to keep your lawn green during summer, try iron products with micro-nutrients to help keep lawns green as these products are allowed. Englewood Helping Hand Adds Hours
Englewood Helping Hand is now open additional hours for those working during the regular pantry hours on Wednesday and Thursday, 8am to 1pm. The food pantry/referral services will be open on the first and third Wednesday of the monthfrom 4:30 to 6:30pm. Englewood Helping Hand is located at 700 E. Dearborn Street, on the campus of Englewood Methodist Church. Services are free to residents in need in the greater Englewood area in Sarasota and Charlotte Counties, and include groceries and household supplies, backpacks for the homeless, utilities assistance, referral services and financial aid for those in crisis. Community Blood Drives
To the Englewood Community: A young girl who lives in Englewood is fighting leukemia at All Children’s Hospital. She needed a platelet transfusion recently and had to wait seven hours for platelets to be available. She also requires whole blood transfusions. Ava is O+ blood type and can receive any platelets, but for whole blood, she can only receive O+ or O-. Platelet donation is a 2 ½ hour process and an appointment is needed. If you would like to donate blood for Ava, just tell the OneBlood staff. Summer is a slow time for blood donations, so blood donations are needed for others as well. The OneBlood “Big Red Bus” has scheduled the following blood drives in Englewood during June. Incentives are offered to donors such as gift cards and T-shirts during June. Donors are requested to visit the OneBlood website, oneblood.org, to schedule an appointment. Please note that blood drives are subject to change at any time. ACO Gulf Coast Cornhole Festival
The ACO Gulf Coast Classic Cornhole Festival, presented by the American Cornhole Organization, will be in Punta Gorda Thursday, June 13 through Saturday, June 15. Open Play – Battle of the Bags is Thursday, June 13, 7pm, at Twisted Fork, 2208 El Jobean Road, Pt. Charlotte. Teams of four will play multiple games for $5,000 guaranteed purse. $50 per player online registration or $250 walk-up team. The Tiki Toss is 6pm on Friday, June 14 at TT’s Tiki Bar, Four Points Sheraton, 33 Tamiami Trail, Punta Gorda. Singles cornhole with five game guarantee. $20 per player online registration or $30 walk-up. Forty people will win $50 each. Republican Club Golf Outing
The West Charlotte County Republican Club is holding a golf outing on Saturday, June 29 at Lemon Bay Golf Club, 9600 Eagle Preserve Drive. Registration opens at 7am with a shotgun start at 8:30am. The format is scramble and the outing is limited to 120 golfers. There will be contests and prizes, including $10,000 for a hole-in-one.
